Product Overview - Why Cement Clinker Mills Need Grade-Matched Media
Cement tube mills operate in two fundamentally different load regimes. Using the same ball grade across both chambers is a common cost-saving measure that backfires: the wrong grade either wears too fast (wasting media budget) or fractures under impact (contaminating cement product).
4.1 Chamber 1 - Impact-Dominated Coarse Grinding
Clinker enters Chamber 1 at 25-35mm particle size. Large balls (Ø60-90mm) break clinker through high-energy impact. The primary failure mode is breakage, not abrasion. 65Mn's higher toughness (Mn content 0.90-1.20%) resists impact fracture while delivering HRC 59-63 hardness - sufficient for clinker abrasion. At this load profile, the additional alloy cost of B2 returns no measurable benefit.
4.2 Chamber 2 - Abrasion-Dominated Fine Grinding
Chamber 2 receives pre-crushed material at 2-5mm and grinds to target fineness (Blaine 3,000-4,500 cm²/g). Small balls (Ø20-50mm) work by attrition. The critical requirement is hardness stability through the full wear cycle - a ball that softens at its core will accelerate wear in the second half of its service life, shifting the Blaine target and forcing unplanned ball top-ups.
B2 (Cr 0.2-0.6%) provides superior through-section hardness uniformity vs. 65Mn in this size range. Surface-to-core HRC difference ≤3 ensures the wear rate stays linear from first use to retirement.

Application Scenarios
1 Standard Two-Chamber Cement Tube Mill
The most common configuration. Chamber 1 (Ø60-90mm, 65Mn) handles clinker breakage from 25-35mm feed; Chamber 2 (Ø20-50mm, B2) finishes to target Blaine fineness. Using grade-matched media in each chamber reduces total media consumption per tonne of cement by 8-15% vs. a single-grade charge.
2 High-Output Mill with Elevated Impact Loads
Larger diameter mills (Ø4.5-5m) running at higher circulating loads generate greater ball-to-ball and ball-to-liner impact energy. In these conditions, B2 is recommended for Chamber 1 as well, replacing 65Mn to ensure full-section hardness uniformity under the elevated impact regime.
3 Extended Size Range for Other Mill Types
For raw material mills, slag mills, or oversized tube mills requiring ball diameters above Ø100mm, we supply 65Mn and B2 up to Ø125mm and B2/B3 up to Ø150mm. Please provide your mill internal diameter, effective length, and feed material hardness for a tailored recommendation.
