Product Description
B3 High-Impact Forged Steel Grinding Balls for Hard and Abrasive Ore Grinding
Designed for High-Impact Grinding Conditions in Ball Mills and SAG Mills
Update:August 18th, 2026
JUNDA B3 forged steel grinding balls are designed for hard and abrasive ore grinding where grinding media are exposed to repeated impact and wear. B3 steel, combined with controlled forging and heat treatment, provides a balance of high hardness, impact toughness and wear resistance for demanding grinding conditions.
B3 grinding balls are suitable for selected ball mill and SAG mill applications where low breakage and stable grinding media performance are important. Ball diameter and hardness should be selected according to ore characteristics, mill conditions and grinding requirements.
Why was the B3 grinding ball chosen instead of the B2 grinding ball for hard and abrasive ores?
B3 grinding balls are chosen instead of B2 when grinding conditions require greater impact toughness and resistance to both impact and abrasive wear. Hard and abrasive ores can generate severe impact loads in SAG and ball mills, increasing the risk of cracking and premature media breakage.
Compared with B2, B3 offers a more impact-oriented balance of hardness, toughness and wear resistance. This makes B3 suitable for demanding hard-rock grinding applications where reducing breakage and maintaining stable grinding media performance are important.
The choice between B2 and B3 should be based on ore hardness, abrasiveness, Bond Work Index (BWI), mill type, ball diameter, operating conditions and actual grinding media consumption.
B3 is not automatically better than B2. The appropriate grade depends on ore abrasiveness, impact intensity, mill type, ball size and actual media consumption.

Applications in Hard Rock Mining
Hard and Abrasive Ore Grinding
B3 forged grinding balls can be considered for hard and abrasive ores where grinding media experience both high impact and abrasive wear.
Primary Grinding
Larger grinding balls can provide higher individual impact energy when processing relatively coarse and competent ore feed.
SAG Mill Grinding
B3 grinding balls can be considered for SAG mill applications where impact resistance and low breakage are important performance requirements.
Ball Mill Grinding
B3 media can also be used in ball mill circuits for continued size reduction of hard and abrasive ore.
Performance in Hard Rock Applications
Proven in SAG mill environments with Bond Work Index ≥14 kWh/t:
Typical applications:

B3 forged balls are produced by the air hammer forging process:
- Billet selection - high-carbon alloy steel bar stock, chemically verified by OES spectrometer before production
- Induction heating - uniform temperature throughout the billet
- Air hammer forging - compresses the steel grain structure, eliminating porosity and orienting the grain flow for maximum toughness
- Quench hardening - controlled water quench locks in surface hardness ≥60 HRC
- Tempering - reduces internal stress, prevents brittle fracture under impact
- Full-section hardness verification - cross-section Rockwell testing, no soft cores accepted
The result: a ball with uniform hardness from surface to core - meaning it grinds effectively throughout its entire wear life, not just when new

FAQ
- What are B3 forged steel grinding balls used for?
- B3 forged steel grinding balls are used for demanding grinding applications where grinding media are exposed to repeated impact and abrasive wear, including selected hard and abrasive ore grinding circuits.
- Are B3 grinding balls suitable for hard rock mining?
- Yes. B3 grinding balls can be considered for hard rock and abrasive ore grinding applications where both impact toughness and wear resistance are important. The appropriate size and grade should be selected according to mill and ore conditions.
- Why are B3 grinding balls suitable for hard and abrasive ores?
- B3 grinding balls provide a balance of high hardness, impact toughness and wear resistance. This combination helps the media withstand repeated impact while resisting abrasive wear during ore grinding.
- What size B3 grinding balls should be used for hard rock grinding?
- The appropriate size depends on feed size, mill diameter, mill type, mill speed, ball charge and target product size. Larger balls are generally considered for coarser feed and higher-impact grinding conditions.
- Can B3 grinding balls be used in SAG mills?
- Yes. B3 grinding balls can be considered for selected SAG mill applications where impact resistance and low breakage are important. The ball size should be matched to the mill and ore operating conditions.
- Can B3 grinding balls be used in ball mills?
- Yes. B3 forged grinding balls can also be used in ball mill circuits processing hard and abrasive ores.
- Does higher hardness always mean better grinding performance?
- No. Grinding media must balance hardness and toughness. Excessive hardness without sufficient toughness may increase the risk of breakage under high-impact conditions.
- How does impact toughness affect grinding ball performance?
- Higher impact toughness can help grinding balls withstand repeated impact and reduce the risk of premature breakage, particularly in demanding grinding conditions.
- What causes grinding ball breakage?
- Grinding ball breakage can be affected by impact intensity, ball material, heat treatment, internal structure, ball size, mill speed, liner conditions and ore characteristics.
- How can I choose between B2 and B3?
- Provide your ore hardness, abrasiveness, feed size, mill type, mill diameter, current ball grade and size, media consumption and breakage data. JUNDA can recommend a suitable grinding media specification based on these conditions.
- Can JUNDA customize B3 grinding balls?
- Yes. Diameter, hardness, chemical composition requirements, packaging and inspection specifications can be customized according to customer requirements and production capability.
