Product Overview
Copper ore processing involves two distinct grinding stages that place different demands on grinding media:4.1 Secondary Ball Milling
Reduces primary mill discharge (typically P80 150-250 μm) to flotation feed (P80 75-150 μm). Ball charge: Ø40-80 mm. The primary requirement is hardness uniformity - a soft-core ball accelerates wear in its second half of service, shifting P80 targets and destabilizing flotation feed quality.4.2 Concentrate Regrind Milling
Rougher and cleaner concentrates are reground to liberation size (P80 20-45 μm) before final cleaning flotation. Ball charge: Ø20-40 mm. Irregular ball geometry disrupts slurry rheology in tower mills; free iron from media wear reacts with xanthate collectors, reducing copper recovery by 0.5-2% in sensitive circuits.Jinan Junda's B2 forged grinding balls address both stages: controlled Cr content (0.2-0.6%) passivates the ball surface; forged construction ensures stable sphericity and density; HRC 61-66 surface hardness with ≤3 HRC core differential maintains consistent grinding performance through the full ball charge life.

Grade Selection - B2 vs. Alternatives
| Property | B2 Value | Benefit in Copper Processing |
| Cr content | 0.2-0.6% | Reduces free Fe²+ release vs. plain carbon steel; protects xanthate collectors |
| Surface HRC | 62-65 | Sufficient wear resistance for abrasive copper sulphide ores |
| Core HRC | 60-63 | ≤3 HRC differential - no soft-core acceleration in late wear stage |
| Impact toughness | ≥12 J/cm² | Eliminates ball fracture; no fragments fouling flotation cells |
| Sphericity retention | High (forged) | Maintains slurry flow dynamics in regrind mills and tower mills |
vs. Plain carbon steel (C45): B2 releases significantly less free Fe²+, reducing xanthate consumption and improving flotation selectivity.
vs. B3 (Cr 0.7-1.2%): B3 recommended if circuit pH < 7 or Bond Ai > 0.5 g/rev. For standard copper circuits (pH 7-9), B2 is the cost-optimised specification.

Application Scenarios
Second-Stage Ball Mill (Ø40-80mm B2)
After primary SAG or rod mill discharge, copper ore enters second-stage ball mills targeting flotation feed at P80 75-150 μm. Consistent B2 hardness distribution maintains stable mill power draw and predictable wear rates, reducing unplanned ball charge top-ups that disrupt flotation stability.Typical operation: wet grinding, pH 7-9, copper sulphide ore (chalcopyrite, bornite), medium abrasion index.
Copper Concentrate Regrind Mill (Ø20-40mm B2)
Rougher and cleaner concentrates are reground to P80 20-45 μm in tower mills, Isa Mills, or conventional ball mills before final cleaning flotation.- Sphericity matters: non-spherical balls create dead zones in fluidized media beds, reducing grinding efficiency and increasing specific energy consumption per tonne.
- Iron contamination is critical: free iron from media dissolution reacts with xanthate collectors. B2's Cr content minimizes iron dissolution under typical regrind circuit pH 7.5-9.5.
| Ball Size Selection Guide | |||
| Circuit Stage | Target P80 | Recommended Size | Grade |
| Concentrate regrind (tower mill) | 20-45 μm | Ø20-30 mm | B2 |
| Fine secondary grinding | 75-106 μm | Ø40-60 mm | B2 |
| Coarse secondary grinding | 106-150 μm | Ø60-80 mm | B2 |

FAQ
- Why B2, not plain carbon steel or B3?
- B2 (Cr 0.2-0.6%) reduces free iron dissolution by ~30-50% vs. C45,protecting xanthate collectors and copper recovery. HRC 62-65 is sufficient for standard copper sulphide circuits (pH 7-9) without B3's alloy premium. Upgrade to B3 only if pH < 7 or Bond Ai > 0.5 g/rev.
- Why does sphericity matter in regrind circuits?
- Tower mills and Isa Mills run a fluidized media bed - deformed balls create dead zones, cut contact efficiency, and raise kWh/t. Forged construction eliminates internal porosity, so balls stay near-spherical through their full wear cycle. Cast media develops flat spots.
- What is the verified breakage rate?
- Below 1%. Tested by 8-meter drop test, 20,000+ cycles per production batch. Drop test records and hardness certificates ship with every order.
- Can 25 mm forged steel grinding balls be used for copper regrinding?
- Yes. 25 mm grinding balls can be suitable for selected copper ore regrinding and fine grinding applications, depending on the feed size, target particle size and mill operating conditions.
- Can I combine sizes in one shipment?
- Yes, minimum 200 kg per size, 500 kg combined. Example: 40% 25 mm + 40% 40 mm + 20% 60 mm in one 20' FCL from Qingdao.
- MOQ and lead time?
- MOQ 500 kg. Lead time 14 working days for stock sizes (20-80 mm B2). Monthly scheduled supply available for operating concentrators.
- How does grinding ball hardness affect copper regrinding?
- Higher hardness can improve abrasive wear resistance, while sufficient toughness helps resist impact-related cracking and breakage. A suitable balance between hardness and toughness is important for continuous grinding.
- What affects grinding media consumption in copper regrinding?
- Media consumption is affected by ore hardness, abrasiveness, feed size, mill operating conditions, grinding media size, material grade, hardness and grinding efficiency.
- Can forged steel grinding balls improve copper mineral liberation?
- Grinding media do not directly determine mineral liberation. However, properly selected grinding media can support the target particle size required for liberation, depending on the ore characteristics and overall grinding circuit design.
- What information should I provide when selecting grinding balls?
- Please provide the mill type, feed size, target particle size, ore hardness, ore abrasiveness, current grinding media size and grade, and grinding media consumption if available.
- Can JUNDA supply customized grinding ball sizes?
- Yes. JUNDA can supply different grinding ball diameters and material grades according to customer requirements, mill conditions and agreed technical specifications.
